The Hallway With Two Exits

The left exit loops back to the ice machine, but the right one has fresh air under the door.

I found a vending machine that still hums behind the motel office. It only takes quarters from years I do not remember, so I taped those coins inside my sleeve.

The hallway carpet is damp in a perfect rectangle outside room 118. I stepped over it and heard someone cough from the ceiling vent.

Tonight I sleep in the laundry room with the dryer door open. Warm metal feels close enough to company.
